Amanita muscaria is the red-capped mushroom with white spots that has been commonly portrayed in movies such as Alice In Wonderland. It is the most recognizable mushrooms due to its potrayal in popular culture. It has also been known as the fly agaric mushroom and has been said to be a psychoactive basidiomycete fungus.
Mycological resources consider it to be poisonous, but according to various sources human death resulting from it is extremely rare. It is said to be hallucinogenic due to its primary compound, known as, muscimol. It has a long history of medicinal and mystical use in many different ancient cultures. In fact, the amateur ethnomycologist R Gordon Wasson suggested in 1968 that fly agaric was the soma mentioned in the Rig Veda texts of India.
