The Nymphaea genus species are a beautiful, aquatic flower that have a long history of adoration and use throughout prehistoric times. The flower may have originated within the Nile valleys before spreading into the SE Asia regions. It can be seen in ancient Egyptian art where it is depicted with scenes of important spiritual and magical rites. Additionally, the flower was the symbol of the ancient Egyptian deity Nefertem.
The presence of the alkaloids nuciferine and aporphine are said to make Nymphaea Caerulea a mild sedative. It's sedating effects have made it a potential candidate for the mythical Lotophagi that was a lotus plant eaten in Homer's Odyssey.
