Turnera diffusa is a shrub which is native throughout Centra and South America, the Carribean, and Mexico. The shrub is relatively small and produces small, aromatic flowers which blossoms in early to late summer and produces fruits that have been compared to the taste of figs. The smell of the flowers have been compared to a strong chamomile-like odor. Damiana has a long history of use throughout its native regions where it has traditionally been made into a tea and an incense due to its relaxing effects. Some of the earliest historical recordings by Spanish missionaries reported that the flowers were mixed with sugar in a tea for use as an aphrodisiac.
It has been claimed that Damiana has a stimulating effect on libido which explains its modern-day use as an aphrodisiac. Mexican folklore claims that it was used as a substitute for triple sec in the original margarita.
